What is paint pouring? A beginner's guide

Paint pouring is a way of making abstract art by pouring runny acrylic paint onto a canvas and letting it flow. Instead of brushes, you use gravity and movement: you tilt, swirl and spread the paint, and the colors blend into patterns no one fully controls. It's also called fluid art or acrylic pouring. At Blank Space Studio in Saigon, we call it motion-paint, because the movement makes the art.

    How it works

Artists mix acrylic paint with a pouring medium until it flows like warm honey. Each color goes into its own cup. You then pour the colors onto a canvas, tilt the canvas so the paint travels to the edges, and watch the colors meet, layer and separate. Every piece turns out one of a kind, even when two people use the same colors.

    Popular techniques

    • Flip cup: layer colors in one cup, flip it onto the canvas, lift, and tilt
    • Dirty pour: combine several colors in a cup, then pour them out together
    • Puddle pour: pour colors one inside another to make rings that spread outward
    • Swipe: drag a layer of paint across the others to reveal colors underneath
    • Splatter: flick or throw paint at the canvas for energy and texture

On the day, your facilitator shows you a few of these, and then you choose your own path.

    Why beginners love it

Paint pouring needs no drawing skills. Physics does a lot of the work, so first-timers end up with canvases that look like they took years of practice. Many people find the process calming too: you focus on the colors and the flow, and the rest of the week fades for a while.

    What happens at a session

    1. You put on an apron and gloves (we provide protective gear).
    2. You pick 3 to 5 colors.
    3. Your facilitator demonstrates a technique.
    4. You pour, tilt and experiment for up to 2 hours.
    5. You leave your canvas to dry. It's ready 2 to 3 business days later: we dry and glaze it to protect the colors and message you when it's ready to collect or deliver.
